  • Program Outline

The Master of Petroleum Engineering is a 'conversion' degree primarily aimed at graduates of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or equivalent in a discipline other than petroleum engineering (e.g. chemical, civil or mechanical engineering) who wish to enter the exploration and production (upstream) part of the petroleum industry.

It is also aimed at petro-technical professionals already working in the upstream petroleum industry who wish to advance their careers in petroleum engineering by achieving a formal qualification. The degree is designed to provide an integrated and focused learning environment for students to obtain the required knowledge and skills to work effectively in a range of petroleum engineering roles.

Individuals who have a relevant science degree (in areas such as geology, geophysics, geosciences or physics) and who have more than one year upstream petroleum industry experience may also be eligible for, and benefit from, this degree.

A key feature of the University of Adelaide petroleum engineering programs is the modern curriculum, integrating core petroleum engineering with geosciences and management, leading to a skill set that matches both the needs of industry and the way it operates.

  • Program Structure

To qualify for the Master of Petroleum Engineering, students must satisfactorily complete 24 units of which a minimum of 15 units must be taken from the list of core courses. The remaining 9 units may be either core courses or electives. The specific list of courses to be undertaken by any student must be agreed by the Program Coordinator at the time of enrolment and will depend on the student’s prior experience and learning goals.

Intending students should consult the Program Coordinator early in the year in which they plan to study to check whether particular courses or projects will be available.

Applicants with adequate upstream oil and gas experience may be considered for mid-year entry.
