The Master of Planning (Urban Design) is a two-year program that is designed to provide advanced coursework leading to professionally-recognised planning qualifications with an emphasis on urban design. The program has a strong foundation in ecological, social and economic sustainability as a basis for planning. It also emphasises skills in communication and collaboration with local communities and professional groups.

The program employs a combination of lectures, tutorials, intensive workshops and studio activity, including urban design studios. Graduates should find employment in government and private practice.

All applicants must submit a portfolio and a Curriculum Vitae to the School of Social Sciences (Discipline of Geography, Environment and Population), University of Adelaide.

If applicants are unable to provide a portfolio or unsure of their ability to demonstrate competence in design skills/knowledge, they can enrol in the Master of Planning and potentially transfer if they demonstrate adequate competence in design skills/knowledge. 

In the Master of Planning (Urban Design) program, assessment is based on project work rather than on examinations. Details of all assessment tasks and the weighting of each are contained in the course guide for each course. Some courses contain assessment hurdles. These are components that must be passed to pass the course overall. All assessment practices within the Master of Planning (Urban Design) are based on and conform to the University’s assessment policy. Other information concerning assessment, including policies related to submission of work and how to apply for supplementary examinations and assignments, can be found on the School’s website and in the Student Handbook.

Urban Designer, Planner, Project Administrator or Project Manager.

• Knowledge and practical skills required for professional practice in planning and urban design (as per Planning Institute of Australia’s Accreditation Policy)
• Knowledge of international urban design and urban and regional planning practice.
  
• Knowledge of strategic planning processes including analysing, evaluating and synthesising information from a range of sources in a systematic and timely fashion. 
• The potential to apply effective, creative and innovative solutions to current and future urban design and urban and regional problems
• Skills in the use of empirical, negotiated and collaborative approaches to urban design and the development of urban and regional strategies
• Skills in the written , oral and graphic presentation of ideas and information relevant to urban and regional planning
• Skills in the use of contemporary information collection, compilation and analysis techniques relevant to urban design and urban and regional planning
• Skills in community engagement
• Life-long learning abilities and intellectual curiosity in the domain of society-environment relations
• Understanding of professional and ethical conduct in urban design and urban and regional planning.

The Master of Planning (Urban Design) has accreditation with the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).
