This program combines the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical) and the Bachelor of Arts, to equip graduates with a multidisciplinary skill-set.

In this combined degree program, students study the concepts of chemical engineering, and undertake an arts major of their choice. Chemical engineering involves the systematic design, development and operation of process systems for the extraction, transformation and recovery of materials.

With designated courses from both disciplines counted towards the combined degree program, the degree can typically be completed in five years (full-time), compared with seven years if undertaken separately.

A combined degree is an approved combination of two degrees, which includes components from both programs and satisfies the minimum of one of those degree programs but not both individual degrees (unlike a double degree). At the end of the combined degree, students will graduate with one parchment.

Combining two areas of study offers graduates not only a more diverse experience at university, but also greater scope of career prospects.

    Selection Criteria
    Year 12 Applicants You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You compete for a place with your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).
    Prerequisites SACE Stage 2: Mathematical Methods (if studied in 2017. If studied year 12 prior to 2017, the equivalent subject was called Mathematical Studies) AND Chemistry AND one of Biology, Physics or Specialist Mathematics.

    IB: Chemistry (SL grade 4/HL grade 3) and EITHER Mathematics (SL grade 4) plus Biology (SL grade 4/HL grade 3) or Physics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3), OR Mathematics (HL grade 3).


    Alternative entry pathways
    • Higher Education applicants
      You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent higher education study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
    • VET applicants
      You must have completed an AQF Certificate IV or above from a Registered Training Organisation. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
    • Special Entry applicants
      You must be 18 years or over before 1 February 2018. If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years (for 2018 entry this means you were enrolled in either 2017 or 2016), you must not have accumulated more than a TOTAL of 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education study (ie. including any study prior to 2016). If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Scheme. See Wirltu Yarlu for further information.

    Note:
    #Students who have not passed SACE Stage 2 Specialist Maths (or equivalent) are required to enrol in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM as a prerequisite to enrolling in MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA. The satisfactory completion of MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM is in addition to the normal requirements of this program. Students may manage their enrolment by enrolling in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM in semester 1, followed by MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA in semester 2 and MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB in summer school.

    *Students with a subject achievement grade of at least C+ in SACE Stage 2 Chemistry (or equivalent) must enrol in CHEM 1100 Chemistry IA and CHEM 1200 Chemistry IB. All other students must enrol into CHEM 1101 Foundations of Chemistry IA and CHEM 1201 Foundations of Chemistry IB.

    ARTS
    Electives may be chosen from those listed in the Program Rules for the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Students must complete a major in accordance with the Program Rules for the Bachelor of Arts. Students commencing prior to 2016 may follow an earlier study plan or contact the Faculty of Arts for enrolment advice.
