Mechanical and sustainable energy engineering enables the development of long-term solutions to meet the world’s rapidly growing energy needs. It uses alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, biomass and new energy efficient technologies for sustainable energy production from existing sources, including coal and gas.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical and Sustainable Energy) specialises in the design of systems that generate and consume energy efficiently and sustainably. Applicable to most systems in which heat and fluid flow are used, this degree incorporates assessment of aerodynamics, thermodynamics, structure load and vibrations, thermal power and cooling cycles, combustion and automatic control.

In addition to considering all possible renewable energy forms including wind, wave, tidal, solar, geothermal, hydro, pumped storage and biomass, this degree is also concerned with the technologies that improve energy efficiencies of conventional mechanical systems that generate or consume energy, such as power stations and buildings.

This program is suitable for students interested in designing renewable energy and/or energy efficient systems, solving problems related to energy generation and consumption, and contributing to the development of a greater sustainable energy future.

    Selection Criteria
    Year 12 Applicants You must not have completed more than 2 years full time equivalent university study (48 units). You compete for a place with your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).
    Prerequisites SACE Stage 2: Mathematical Methods (if studied in 2017. If studied year 12 prior to 2017, the equivalent subject was called Mathematical Studies) and one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Specialist Mathematics.

    IB: either Mathematics (HL grade 3); or, Mathematics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3) and one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3)


    Alternative entry pathways
    • Higher Education applicants
      You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent higher education study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
    • VET applicants
      You must have completed an AQF Certificate IV or above from a Registered Training Organisation. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
    • Special Entry applicants
      You must be 18 years or over before 1 February 2018. If you have studied at higher education level in the last two years (for 2018 entry this means you were enrolled in either 2017 or 2016), you must not have accumulated more than a TOTAL of 2 years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education study (ie. including any study prior to 2016). If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Your STAT result is not weighted between verbal and quantitative components. Indigenous applicants may be eligible for entry through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Scheme. See Wirltu Yarlu for further information.

  • Degree Structure

    The first two years of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical and Sustainable Energy) are almost identical to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mechanical) with strong emphasis on design and engineering science fundamentals. This enables students to build a solid foundation and core skills and knowledge in mechanical engineering.

    The third and fourth years build upon the basic principles established in the first two years and focus on the design and efficiency improvement of systems that generate or consume energy.

    Students are required to complete 12 weeks of approved practical experience.

    EXTRA COURSE REQUIREMENT
    Students who have not taken SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics (or equivalent) will be required to enrol in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM in semester 1, followed by MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA in semester 2 with MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB in Summer School to complete the Mathematics requirements at Level 1. The satisfactory completion of Mathematics IM is in addition to the requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours).

    ENGINEERING COMMUNICATION
    Unless exempted by the Faculty, all international students are required to take Engineering Communication. At the commencement of study, the Faculty will advise which course is to be replaced by ENG 3003 Engineering Communication EAL.
