The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree is globally accepted as the degree which provides most flexibility for students, while equipping them with the skills base essential for many careers. The choice of courses available in the BA is extensive, and this is reflected in the list of possible majors. We aim to accommodate students with both specific study interests and career plans and also those who want to sample new disciplines and explore associated employment opportunities. Students have complete control throughout their degree, with expert guidance on appropriate course selection available at all times.

Music programs provide the intensive professional training required for employment in the music industry. They seek to provide a challenging and stimulating learning environment in which all students may achieve their full potential. They develop educated, flexible and imaginative graduates who possess the knowledge and skills required to function effectively in a wide range of professional contexts.

The Bachelor of Music Education combines a study of music with a major study in music teaching.  Graduates are able to apply for registration as a secondary school teacher in South Australia.

The combined degree Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Music Education comprises completion of the Bachelor of Music Education (96 units) plus selected Level I, II and III Arts courses (52 units) to finalise the Bachelor of Arts program. It enables students to pursue a broad range of interests in music and the arts in a self-designed, integrated academic program. The study of foreign languages is of particular significance to vocalists and musicologists, while history or anthropology may be of particular interest to an ethnomusicologist. Various media studies may also be of interest to Composition and Music Technology majors.

  • Program Structure
This program involves 144 units of study, normally taken full time over six years. First year studies focus on music courses, specialising in classical or jazz performance or composition or music technology. The remaining five years combine courses from the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Music Education programs

Experience is also gained in music education which eventually results in formal recognition for teacher registration. Students undertake three periods of teaching practice in the latter years, with an introductory 30 day practicum and two five-week periods, one in the country and one in metropolitan Adelaide. Graduates from this program are awarded both the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Music Education and the Bachelor of Music Education is recognised and accepted by the Teachers Registration Board in South Australia, interstate and some overseas countries. Graduates from this program do not need to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Education.

    Additional Entry Requirements ?
all applicants must attend and pass an audition/interview and an aural/theory test. It is possible to audition for more than one instrument or area of specialisation if you have multiple interests and could pursue studies in any one of them. Separate audition application forms for each are required in that case. The Main Round of auditions/interviews will be held in the week beginning 3 October 2011. In mid-November, the Conservatorium will be sending provisional offers for Music programs to suitable applicants who audition/interview in the Main Round. These offers will be conditional upon satisfactory results obtained in SACE Stage II (or equivalent). The on-line and downloadable audition/interview application form and full details are available on the web at www.music.adelaide.edu.au. Application forms for the Main Round must be returned to the Elder Conservatorium of Music by Friday 9 September 2011. Late applications cannot be accepted. For those unable to attend the Main Round, a small number of auditions/interviews will be held in a Late Round commencing on 30 November 2011. Applications for this will close on Tuesday 15 November. Applicants will usually need to provide a separate written explanation about their need for a late audition/interview. While a further round of auditions/interviews may be held in February 2012, these will not include all instruments/specialisations. Any Jazz instrumental auditions are highly unlikely to be available. The Conservatorium offers auditions/interviews in selected interstate centres, particularly Melbourne and Sydney.
