Chemical Engineering is involved in the systematic design, development and operation of process systems for the extraction, transformation and recovery of materials. It is a key engineering discipline, which combines knowledge of basic chemistry and mathematics with engineering principles and real world economic considerations. The scale of operation varies from small to very large, and a principal feature of chemical engineering is the translation of laboratory-scale research results to large-scale commercial production. Chemical Engineering is the discipline which sustains and improves a range of industries as diverse as food processing, petrochemicals, ceramics, petroleum refining, primary metals, plastics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, glass and specialty chemicals.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is globally accepted as the program which provides most flexibility in study choices for students. The BA suits students who are interested in the big picture, finding answers to burning questions, understanding human behaviours, cultures and history, and exploring new or existing areas of study. Students specialise in areas of their choice by taking a 'major' (from one of 25 areas) and potentially a 'minor' (from a range of areas). This study plan gives students depth of knowledge and skills in a specialised field, while having breadth of understanding in other areas.
Regardless of their specialisation, all BA students build skills that are highly valued by a variety of employers, such as the ability to find creative solutions to problems, researching and analysing information, the capacity for lifelong learning, and effectively communicating at many levels. These attributes mean students can adapt to different challenges that they might face in their future careers, studies and daily lives.
Students may complete the single degree of Bachelor of Engineering/Arts in five years of full-time study (with some overload). In addition to the program of study for Engineering, students complete 12 units at level I from any Humanities and Social Science discipline and a major sequence. You must not have completed more than 4 years full time equivalent university study (96 units). You compete for a place with your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).
SACE Stage 2 Chemistry
You must have completed at least half a year full time equivalent higher education study. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated for each separate program you have undertaken (apart from some double degree programs where the GPA is combined). You compete on the basis of your best GPA.
You must have completed an AQF Diploma or above. Your application will be ranked according to the level of the award.
You must be 18 years or over before February 1st of the year that you will be studying. If you have studied a higher education program within the last two years, you must not have studied more than 2 years full-time equivalent in that program and you must not hold a completed higher education level award. If you meet this criteria, you will be ranked according to your result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Personal Competencies (PC) and Employment Experience (EE) statements may also contribute to your rank. If you submit a PC or EE statement, and one of these ranks higher than your STAT score, then the highest ranking statement will contribute 50% to your overall rank and the STAT will contribute the remaining 50%. If you do not submit a PC or EE statement, or if the statements have a lower rank than the STAT, then you will compete for a place on the basis of your STAT result only. To satisfy the Arts component of this program, students must undertake 30 units of Arts courses, which includes an approved major sequence (24 units). The remaining 6 units can be undertaken at any level. Students should consult the Bachelor of Arts academic program rules for the list of approved major sequences and the specific requirements of each.Semester 1

^Students with a Subject Achievement score of at least 13 in SACE Stage 2 Chemistry or equivalent must enrol into CHEM 1100 Chemistry 1A and CHEM 1200 Chemistry 1B. All other students must enrol in CHEM 1101 Foundations of Chemistry 1A and CHEM 1201 Foundations of Chemistry 1B. *Students who have undertaken SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics (or equivalent) will be required to enrol in MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA followed by MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB. Students who have not undertaken SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics will be required to enrol in MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM, then MATHS 1011 Mathematics IA in the following semester followed by MATHS 1012 Mathematics IB in Summer Semester, in order to complete the level I Mathematics requirement. The satisfactory completion of MATHS 1013 Mathematics IM is in addition to the normal requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering. |
