Civil and Environmental Engineering is concerned with assessing and managing the effects of human activity on the natural and built environments. The goal is to do this in a sustainable manner. This ensures that we can provide adequate infrastructure and natural resources for current generations, without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same. Environmental engineers may be involved in environmental impact assessment, water resources management, pollution control, waste management or the planning and design of engineering facilities to minimise their impact on the environment.
This program includes a core of civil engineering analysis and design, along with detailed studies in environmental science and engineering. It has a particular emphasis on water resources management and pollution control. Computer-based methods are used extensively in the program.
The first two years of the program build a mathematical, scientific and engineering design foundation for the third and fourth years where studies include professional engineering courses, specialisations, communication and management courses and project work. The program includes studies in environmental economics and environmental law. Students are required to complete 12 weeks of approved work experience.
Studies in Science may be chosen from biological sciences, chemistry, geology, physics and mathematics.

*Students who have undertaken SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics (or equivalent) will be required to enrol in Mathematics IA followed by Mathematics IB. Students who have not undertaken SACE Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics will be required to enrol in Mathematics IM, then Mathematics IA in the following semester followed by Mathematics IB in Summer Semester, in order to complete the level I Mathematics requirement. Alternatively, students may take 3 units of Level II or III courses offered by the School of Mathematical Sciences. In special circumstances other combinations of elective courses may be acceptable but must be approved by the Head of School. Students may also, with the approval of the Head of School, replace one or more elective courses with appropriate courses offered by other schools in the University. The availability of courses is conditional on the availability of staff, facilities and sufficient enrolments. |
The double degree combination provides future engineers with the skills base they will need in management positions, graduates of this program can seek employment in fields relevant to Civil & Environmental Engineering and Science.
