  • Program Outline

    This is a three year degree in clinical veterinary science that when successfully completed will allow registration of the graduate as a veterinarian.  The program is at the Masters by coursework level. Most students will enter this program after completion of the Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) program at the University of Adelaide.  However, students with a recognised pre-veterinary or veterinary degree may also be eligible for entry.

    It should be noted that you can not study this program part-time.

  • Program Structure

    The first two years of the program aims to develop the scientific and technical skills needed to become a veterinarian and includes a theme of professional development. The final year is made up of a total of nine by one month clinical and practical rotations, forming an intern year to consolidate scientific knowledge and technical skills prior to entering practice. There is also a requirement for a further twenty three weeks of extramural practical work during the program.

    A completed Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) or equivalent recognised degree and completion of 12 weeks animal husbandry extramural studies. Applicants will be ranked on academic performance.

    Core Rotations

    Extra-mural program

    A total of 23 weeks of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine extra-mural studies (EMS) is required to be undertaken during the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program.   This is broken into three components;
    a. 6 weeks of preparatory extra-mural experience studies (EMS-1)
    b. 8 weeks of level II EMS (EMS-2)
    c. 9 weeks of level III EMS which cannot being until DVM level II courses are successfully completed.

    Before beginning a period of extra mural experience, a candidate is required to ensure that it will be satisfactory to the Faculty by consulting the Extra Mural Coordinator or nominee, concerned.
    Upon completion of each period of extra mural experience, a candidate is required to submit a statement of practical experience gained, certified by the employer for approval by the Extra Mural Coordinator or nominee.

  • Career Opportunities

    Accreditation of the programme cannot happen fully until 2013 when the first cohort are in their final year and another full accreditation visit occurs.  Registration of students can only occur after accreditation of the program has occurred.

    Graduates may also advance to research training via the Master of Science and/or PhD route or to clinical specialty training via the residency and specialty examination route.
