This program is intended for graduates from other disciplines who wish to pursue studies of design in the built environment. The two-semester Graduate Diploma in Design Studies can be taken alone or as the first part of the professionally accredited academic program of Master of Architecture (Coursework).

  • Program Structure
The emphasis is upon the knowledge, skills and context within which architectural practice takes place. Courses include urban sustainability, history and theory of architecture, and technology in design. They also develop skills in architectural design and the communication of design through graphics, including computer-aided design. The courses of the GradDip program map directly onto the Level II and Level III core courses of the Bachelor of Design Studies (with an architectural studies major) program to provide the required assumed knowledge for entry to the Master of Architecture (Coursework) program. The Grad.Dip. and BDesSt students share classes and work together on team projects.

The Graduate Diploma can be taken either full-time (one year) or part-time (two years). There are three 6-unit courses and two 3-unit courses in the GradDip - three that map onto Level II BDesSt core courses and two that map onto Level III BDesSt courses. Students taking the GradDip over two years would be expected to take the equivalent Level II BDesSt in the first year of enrolment, and the equivalent Level III BDesSt courses in the second year.
