  • Program Outline

The Graduate Diploma in Education can be undertaken by students who have completed an undergraduate degree. The objective of the program is to prepare graduates for entry to the teaching profession in middle and senior secondary schooling or with adult learners.

The Graduate Diploma program is designed to develop the theoretical knowledge, values, practical experience and skills of professional teachers. Equally it aims to develop an understanding of the nature of the educative process, the directions it could take, and the ways and means by which it may best be achieved and sustained.

It is recognised for teacher registration purposes in South Australia, and this registration is, in most cases, portable to other states and overseas countries.

  • Program Structure

The program provides a systematic study of issues in education such as professional practice; learning and motivation; the social context of education; student-teacher interaction; and curriculum and assessment in the Australian context. It incorporates two 5-week blocks of supervised teaching in schools, one in the metropolitan area and one in country South Australia. Students are also required to undertake studies in curriculum areas related to undergraduate qualifications and teaching specialisations. Areas expected to be covered are: Agricultural Science, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, English, Geography, History, Junior Science, Mathematics, various Modern Languages, Music, Physics, Psychology and Studies of Society and Environment. Quotas are applied in general school teaching curriculum areas.
