Adelaide is home to a large proportion of Australia's defence industries which contribute over
$1 billion to South Australia's Gross State Product. 70% of Australian defence companies are located
in Adelaide. The principal government military research institution, the Defence Science and Technology
Organisation, and other defence technology organisations such as Tenix are located in Salisbury near
the RAAF Base in Edinburgh and others near Technology Park. South Australia receives around 30% of total
defence capital expenditure for new equipment and systems upgrades awarded within Australia, and generates
about $2 billion in annual output (including defence electronics). The sector employs about 15,000 people
directly and indirectly.
The South Australian Government has developed a State Defence Sector Plan outlining the State's
commitment to each of the sectors of the next decade. Recent successes for the State including a $6 billion
contract awarded to ASC Pty Ltd to build the Royal Australian Navy's Air Warfare Destroyer fleet
and Techport Australia, where the State Government is investing $240 million to establish the nation's
most modern shipbuilding and repair facility.
