Dr Adam Toomes

• Biography/ Background

  My postdoctoral research focuses on the trade of exotic pets and the resulting conservation threats to Australian endemic reptiles. The international wildlife trade is incredibly complex and spans a wide diversity of traded taxa, use-types, political jurisdictions and both physical and online marketplaces. To better understand trade dynamics and better predict emergent conservation and biosecurity threats, I utilise a range of analytical techniques and data sources to quantify poorly-regulated trade.

  I enjoy a generalist and collaborative approach to research, with research experience that spans vertebrate field trapping techniques, a suite of statistical analyses, data mining and basic natural language processing. I have co-supervised four Honours across a variety of research topics in environmental science and criminology.

  I was previously the President of the Biology Society of South Australia (2019-2021), a local non-profit organisation that assists its members to gain practical experience in field biology, and hone their natural history knowledge. Currently I am an active part of the conservation academic community in Adelaide.
  

• Community Engagement

  I have been a core committee member of the Biology Society of South Australia since 2019 and have greatly enjoyed being part of such a creative and welcoming community. It is encouraging to watch the BSSA thrive and provide up-and-coming environmentalists with the opportunity to engage with nature and hone their science communication skills.
