Biography/ Background

Byron completed his South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) in 2003 at St Mark's College Bosco Campus in Port Pirie, South Australia. He then commenced a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Adelaide in 2004 for one year before transferring into a Bachelor of Science Degree in 2006. He completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in 2008 majoring in Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Geoscience. In 2009 Byron completed his Honours Degree in Environmental Geoscience achieving a first class award. During this time, he did summer vacation work at the Port Pirie Smelters working in the Environment Team and has seen this site change hands from Pasminco to Zinifex to Nyrstar (present).

In February 2010, Byron commenced a PhD in Environmental Geoscience after receiving an Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship and CRC LEME scholarship. He attended the inaugural Australian Regolith Geoscientists Association (ARGA) conference and presented his honours work, which he received an award for best student presentation. Byron's research is focussed on Regolith Expressions of Iron-Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) Mineralisation within the Moonta Sub-Domain, Olympic Domain, South Australia. This involves understanding the geochemical and biogeochemical signatures found within IOCG mineralisation and understanding the landscape evolution and formation of these transported regolith settings. His research will also focus on deep cover regolith profiles of these settings and understanding the key interfaces relating to regolith expressions and IOCG mineralisation. Byron research is concentrated at the Hillside Prospect and Middleback Ranges with further infill work within the Moonta Sub-Domain, South Australia.

Byron's research will be supported by the newly formed Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC) and the Centre for Tectonics Resources and Explorations (TRaX).

Byron is also the PhD Representative for Geology & Geophysics.

Byron's PhD supervisor is Dr. Steven Hill.
