Biography/ Background

Carol joined the staff as an Associate Lecturer in early 2005. Her PhD thesis ('Architecture and Polite Culture in Eighteenth-Century England: Blackstone's Architectural Manuscripts') was completed in March, 2007 and she is currently working on an edition of William Blackstone's 'Elements of Architecture'(1747). Carol's research interests focus upon the professions in eighteenth-century England and English social and cultural history 1660-1760. She is also interested in teaching and learning in Higher Education.  She recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at the University of Adelaide.

In 2008 Carol joined Katherine Ellison (Illinois State University) in an interdisciplinary project which is investigating the potential of Second Life for learning and teaching in the Humanities. They are constructing a virtual 18th century London to test the pedagogical & practical value of virtual worlds as an innovative learning and teaching space for the Humanities in Higher Education.

In 2009 Carol initiated and drafted a successful application for funding to the Australian Learning and Teaching Council. The two-year project, entitled 'Getting a MUVE On:Developing Web 2.0 Curricula in the Humanities', is headed by Professor David Lemmings. It involves researchers in the Disciplines of History and English at the Univeristy of Adelaide and History at Murdoch University.

Carol took up the position of Project Manager for the project in 2010. She also designed and coordinated the project's innovative pilot course 'Power, Passion & Greed: Georgian London 1714-1830' taught in Semester 1, 2010 and Semester 1, 2011.  As part of the assessment for this course students particpate in workshops and conduct a research project in the virtual world Second Life in preparation for their research essay.
