Biography/ Background

Assoc. Prof. Corinna Van Den Heuvel completed her PhD on the response of amyloid precursor protein following traumatic brain injury (TBI) at the University of Adelaide in 1999 and during this time was an active member of the Adelaide Head Injury Group.  Throughout her PhD, Dr Van Den Heuvel presented at several national and international conferences and was the recipient of two Young Investigator awards.  She subsequently was appointed as an associate lecturer in the Department of Pathology in 2000, then promoted to Senior lecturer in 2004 and recently promoted to Associate Professor within the School of Medical Sciences. 

She is a program advisor for the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program, Honours coordinator for the Discipline of Anatomy and Pathology and course coordinator of General Pathology IIIHS.

She is part of the Adelaide Centre for Neuroscience Research and her research interests are in the early response of genes and proteins to traumatic brain and spinal cord injury and stroke using immunocytochemistry and specialised molecular pathological techniques. Her current research focusses on the Amyloid Precursor Protein as a neuroprotectant in traumatic brain injury; Neuropeptides in traumatic brain injury and stroke; Neuropeptide antagonists in the treatment of elevated intracranial pressure; Substance P antagonists to reduce brain oedema formation.  She also has collaborations with Forensic Science SA investigating suicide.  Her work has been presented both nationally and internationally and published widely in internationally recognised journals.  She has supervised numerous first class Honours and PhD students.
