To link to this page, please use the following URL: Biography/ BackgroundDavid Lockett commenced studies as a pianist at the Elder Conservatorium of Music as a twelve year old. By the time he completed his Bachelor of Music degree, he had performed as concerto soloist with the Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras and had appeared many times on national radio and television. Since then, he has performed widely throughout Australia and in thirteen overseas countries. He has performed well over three hundred major solo, concerted and chamber works, ranging from the music of Bach and Scarlatti through to the most recent works by contemporary composers. His contribution to Australian music has resulted in more than thirty première performances together with extensive research on the music of Margaret Sutherland. His CD recording of Sutherland's piano music was described by Soundscapes International Review of Fine Music as 'an enormously important and welcome disc'. The Melbourne Age wrote: 'Pianist David Lockett's quality recording . . . is a must for anyone interested in Australian music'. He has also produced a performing edition of Sutherland's music, published by AMPD. In addition to his interest in music from the last one hundred years, David Lockett has maintained a deep love of the Viennese classical composers and has performed many of the solo and duo sonatas of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. David Lockett's teaching has been acknowledged through a number of honours and prizes, including a Stephen Cole Award for Excellence in Teaching at the University of Adelaide. He is a patron of the Music Teachers' Association of South Australia and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Piano Teachers' National Association of Japan. He has given master classes and lectures in the United Kingdom, the United States, Serbia, Canada, Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and New Zealand. He is frequently engaged as an examiner and adjudicator nationally and internationally. David Lockett holds a Doctor of Music degree from the University of Adelaide. After relinquishing the position of Director of the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the end of 2009, he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor.
