Biography/ Background

Dr Julie Haynes
PhD 1998 (University of Adelaide),
B.Sc. 1972 (University of Adelaide), Majors - Histology, Physiology.

Julie has had almost 40 years experience in tertiary education in the design and delivery of courses in introductory anatomy, structural cell biology, general histology, and histopathological techniques at the University of South Australia (1972 – 1976) and at the University of Adelaide (1977 onwards). She currently coordinates or contributes to courses in BHlthSc, BSc, MBBS and BDS. She has created hundreds of histology micrographs and electronic images that are used for teaching in many courses at the University of Adelaide as well as two other universities.

Julie coordinates undergraduate teaching of Anatomical Sciences courses in the School of Medical Sciences. She is a Program and Course Advisor for BHlthSc and a member of the Admissions and Oral Assessment Committees for the Faculty of Health Sciences.


Julie’s research interests are focussed on relationships between microstructure and function and have encompassed studies on parathyroid glands, mast cells and blood cells in marsupials, skin grafts, and investigations of the causes of renal failure in koalas in the Adelaide Hills. She has assisted many researchers, postgraduate and Honours students with the interpretation of microstructure in histological sections.
