Qualifications

I received my Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Adelaide in 1979. In 1980 I received my Bachelor of Science in Dentistry with First Class Honours and in 1983 graduated Doctor of Philosophy. I qualified for Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the Special Stream of Periodontics in 1991. In 1996 I qualified for the degree of Doctor of Dental Science on the basis of a collection of published research papers. I am a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and the International College of Dentists.

Teaching Interests

I am the current supervisor of the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Periodontics) postgraduate training program. A course information booklet can be found below.

Research Interests

I am principally interested in the connective tissues of the periodontium and their role in health, disease and regeneration. In particular our focus is on the role that proteoglycans play in these tissues.

Current active areas of research include:

  1. Tissue engineering of Periodontal Matrices using cell seeding into bioresorbable matrices. This includes specific studies on the role of matrix components in the regeneration of periodontal structures.
  2. Effect of various growth factors on proteoglycan synthesis. Using cell culture, northern hybridisation, PCR and immunohistochemical techniques.
  3. An in vitro assessment of the cells involved in periodontal regeneration. This study involves extensive cell culture work and a variety of methods to determine fibroblast phenotype characteristics.
  4. Development of the periodontal ligament and other components of the periodontium. Using a rat model we are principally studying the localisation and expression of a variety of growth factors in the developing periodontium
  5. The expression of various proteoglycans by lymphocytes.
  6. The relationship between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Main areas of Research Interest are:

Periodontal Diseases
Connective Tissue Biochemistry
Proteoglycans
Acute & Chronic Inflammation
Lymphocyte function
Neutrophil Function
Immunopathology
Rheumatoid Arthritis
