Research Interests

Modelling and optimisation of water resources, including:

  • Hydraulics
    • Water Distribution Systems (WDS)
    • Open channel flow
  • Hydrology
    • Rainfall-runoff modelling
  • Water quality
    • Chlorine and chloramine residuals in WDSs
    • Salinity
  • Data-driven modelling methods
    • Artificial neural networks
    • Mutual information
  • Optimisation using Evolutionary Algorithms
    • Theory and application of Genetic Algorithms and other evolutionary methods

Matt's current research is funded by an ARC Linkage Project with the Department for Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation USE Dryland Salinity and Flood Management Program, titled "Innovative approach to the optimal management of water resources and application to the Upper South East Region of South Australia". The project will develop a Decision Support Tool to assist in the management of the regulators in the drains and wetlands in the Upper South East region of South Australia. This involves both the modelling and optimisation of the rainfall-runoff processes, hydraulics of drains, wetland ecology and groundwater influences in the region.
