Biography/ Background

Nigel Wilson is a Senior Lecturer at the Adelaide Law School.

Nigel holds Law (First Class Honours) and Economics degrees from the University of Adelaide and a Masters degree, the Bachelor of Civil Law degree, from the University of Oxford.

Nigel Wilson was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in 1992 in the Supreme Court of South Australia and in the High Court of Australia.  From 1992 to 1995 he practised as a barrister and solicitor at Minter Ellison Baker O’Loughlin (now Minter Ellison) during which time he was also a Tutor and Examiner in the Law of Torts and a Tutor in the Law of Evidence at the University of Adelaide Law School.  From 1995 to 2010 Nigel was a barrister at Bar Chambers, Adelaide, where he practised in all areas of commercial and civil litigation and is now an Associate Member.  Nigel was an Adjunct Senior Lecturer of the University of Adelaide Law School in the postgraduate subjects Technology, Law and Society, Insurance Law and Negligence and Intentional Wrongs prior to his appointment as a Senior Lecturer.

Nigel teaches in the following subjects:

·         Evidence and Proof in Theory and Practice (LAW 3502) (Course Co-ordinator)

·         Dispute Resolution and Ethics (LAW 3501)

·         Technology, Law and Society (LAW 7042) (Course Co-ordinator) (Masters  programme)

·         Insurance Law (LAW 7098) (Course Co-ordinator) (Masters programme)

 

Nigel is Special Counsel (Legal and Regulatory) of the Convergent Communication Research Group (CCRG).  CCRG is an inter-disciplinary research group of academics and industry professionals investigating the technical, commercial, social and legal implications of telecommunications and media convergence.  Nigel was the Chair of the International Workshop on e-Forensics Law which was held at the University of Adelaide in 2009 and was recently the joint author of a Report to the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy entitled A study of the privacy, security and identity management implications of cloud computing for home users and small to medium enterprises”.

 

He is Assistant Director of the Faculty of Professions’ Research Unit for the Study of Society, Law and Religion (RUSSLR) which is the first such centre in Australia.

 

Nigel has presented papers at international, national and local conferences and published in international and national journals in his areas of expertise and is a member of the Professional Board of the Computer Law and Security Review and a Section Editor (Law) of the Digital Forensics, Security and Law Journal.

 

Nigel is a member of the South Australian Bar Association and was involved in the establishment of its post-admission barrister training and advanced advocacy programme as the Secretary and Convenor of the SABA Bar Readers’ Course Committee from 2001-2008.  He is also a member of the Law Council of Australia and its Competition and Consumer Law Committee, the Law Society of South Australia, the Australian Insurance Law Association, the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association.

 

Since 2005 Nigel has been responsible for the preparation for Lawguard Management Pty Ltd of the Annual Review of Australian case law and legislation in relation to professional liability and underwriting risk for the purposes of the South Australian legal practitioners’ compulsory professional indemnity policy with international underwriters.  Since 2009 Nigel has been responsible for the delivery to South Australian legal practices and not-for-profit organisations of risk management and training programmes in relation to technology, insurance, torts, e-discovery, data management and digital evidence issues.
