At 16, Noel Lindsay dropped out of school to start his first business which initially succeeded but then failed. Learning from this failure prompted him to complete his high school education of an evening while working during the day and then enter University. Subsequent to completing his tertiary studies, Noel co-founded, developed, and harvested successful businesses in Australia, South Africa, and Malaysia. He also worked in the corporate insolvency field as a Chartered Accountant in the areas of company liquidations and receiverships and then as a Director of a Sydney-based venture capital fund.
As Pro Vice Chancellor (Entrepreneurship), Noel is responsible for overseeing the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation across the University of Adelaide while working with the University's technology transfer office, Adelaide Enterprise, to promulgate an enriched entrepreneurial culture in the University leading to increased commercialisation outcomes. From an external facing perspective, his responsibilities include enhancing the University's social and economic impact on the communities it touches, through entrepreneurial engagement, in line with the University's Adelaide Research for Impact Strategic Plan.
Within these contexts, his specific tasks comprise initiatives in Adelaide and overseas which span the University's ThincLab Innovation Hub Network - ThincNet (encompassing ThincLab Adelaide, ThincLab Singapore, and ThincLab Chalons - France), the TechLab Maker Space, Australian eChallenge Pre-Incubation and New Venture Accelerator Programs in South Australia, France, and Italy, and the development and delivery of the University's entrepreneurship-related MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and SPOCs (Small Private Online Courses).
As Director of the Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation and Innovation Centre and Professor of Entrepreneurship and Commercialisation at the University, he leads a team that teaches and undertakes research in the areas of entrepreneurship, innovation, technology commercialisation, project management, and systems. Noel's research interests include both business and social entrepreneurship.
Noel has held appointments at the University of Adelaide as Academic Director Singapore Operations (being posted to Singapore in this position), Head of the School of Marketing and Management, and Acting Associate Dean Diversity and Inclusion.
Noel graduated from The University of Queensland with a BCom (Hons) and a PhD in Commerce. He is a Member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and is a Fellow of CPA Australia. Noel holds a Public Practicing Certificate with both accounting organisations. He also is a Member of STEP - the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
