Dr Philip Van Eyk
Biography/ Background
Dr Philip van Eyk is a Postdoctoral Research
Associate in the School of Chemical Engeineering. He recently graduated with a
PhD titled ”Quantitative in-situ measurements of sodium release during the
combustion of single coal particles using planar laser induced fluorescence”
which was undertaken as part of the CRC for Clean Power from Lignite. From this
work, a laser diagnostic technique was developed for the direct quantitative
in-situ measurement of volatile sodium release during the combustion of solid
fuels, which has now been utilised to better understand sodium release from the
combustion of both Loy Yang brown coal and also a waste fuel from the paper
industry, black liquor. He has also recently gained several years experience
designing and operating large, laboratory-scale gasifiers at the South
Australian Coal Research Laboratory at the University’s Thebarton campus, with
the aim of overcoming ash related operational problems during the gasification
of high sodium South Australian brown coals in fluidised beds.
