  • 1985 inaugural recipient of the Shakti P. Duggal Award for a physicist under the age of 35, the first international prize in cosmic ray physics.

Research Interests

Ray Protheroe's research has concentrated on theoretical aspects of high energy astrophysics, in particular those involving acceleration, interaction and cascading of energetic particles in radiation, matter and magnetic fields ranging from the Earth's environment to that present relatively soon after the big bang. Specificly, the astrophysical environments investigated have included the terrestrial atmosphere, the heliosphere, stars, pulsars, interstellar space, X-ray binaries, supernovae, extragalactic space, active galaxies, and the early universe. Most recently, his research has been aimed at investigating the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays through a theoretical and experimental project, LUNASKA, to search for ultra-high energy neutrinos using the lunar Cherenkov technique in which radio telescopes are used to moniter neutrino interactions in the moon's outer layer.
