Biography/ Background

Born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Tilanka first moved to Australia in 2005 to begin a B Sc. in optics and photonics at the University of Adelaide. Following completion of that in 2007 Tilanka began his honours in 2008 at the Centre of Expertise in Photonics.

Tilanka graduated from his honours in 2008 with a first class and has since begun a Ph. D at the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing under the supervision of Prof. Tanya Monro and Dr. Shahraam Afshar V. His research looks into nonlinear effects in optical fibres and their applications in telecommunications.

Winner of Adelaide Outstanding Achiever Scholarship, International (AOASI); 2005. Scholarship extended in 2008 to cover honours year.
