Guidelines for Collaborative Activities between the University of Adelaide and TAFE SA

These guidelines have been developed to assist staff from each institution seeking to enter into collaborative arrangements.  The expansion of arrangements is the responsibility of Executive Deans in the University of Adelaide and the program sponsoring General Managers in TAFE SA.
In the spirit of the MOU, the University of Adelaide and DFEEST/TAFE SA are committed to maximising opportunities for students to move between the two sectors and to facilitate that movement by simplifying transfer processes.

In general, this will entail a movement away from assessment on a case by case basis of qualifications to formally recognised credit for courses (articulation) or part courses (block credit). In non-standard cases it may also be appropriate to individually assess credit to be given on the basis of prior study and/or life experience and acquisition of skills. In addition to block credit arrangements, other entry criteria specified by each institution need to be met by students.

Current credit arrangements are summarised in the Pathways & Credit Transfer Guide.

TAFE SA has a website dedicated to Credit Transfer as well as a Credit transfer directory.

The University and TAFE SA seek opportunities to collaborate in various ways for mutual benefit. To facilitate the expansion of educational pathways for students the following processes have been developed (please note - the following links are only available to University of Adelaide Staff. TAFE SA staff members can access the same information by contacting Sharon Guscott):

National Guidelines on Cross-Sector Qualification Linkages

Universities Australia has established National Policy Guidelines on cross-sector linkages. (May 2001)
The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) comprises national qualifications issued in:

  • the secondary schools sector;
  • the vocational education and training sector (TAFE and registered private providers); and
  • the higher education sector (mainly universities).

Further information about the particular qualification, including the education sector which is responsible for their accreditation, can be accessed through the Australian Qualifications Framework website.

Guide to Credit Levels

The National Policy Guidelines have identified the following linkage relationships as a guide in developing articulation arrangements and dual award qualifications in the same fields between Diploma and Bachelor qualifications. Depending on the particular nature of the awards being linked, actual credit levels may be greater or less than the recommended level:

  • 50% credit for an Advanced Diploma when linked to a three-year Bachelor Degree
  • 37.5% credit for an Advanced Diploma when linked to a four-year Bachelor Degree
  • 33% credit for a Diploma when linked to a three-year Bachelor Degree
  • 25% credit for a Diploma when linked to a four-year Bachelor Degree

Arrangements need to be formally agreed by the institutions and signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Academic) of the University of Adelaide and the Director, Education Services and Programs, DFEEST.

Where possible, two-way credit between the University and TAFE SA should be considered. Credit transfer arrangements will apply across TAFE SA.

Please also refer to the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) Good Practice Principles for Credit Transfer and Articulation. MCEETYA has endorsed a series of initiatives to improve Credit Transfer and Articulation from VET/TAFE SA to higher education.
