There is energy to be saved by using IT equipment effectively and efficiently.
Here is a short list of things you can do at your own desk to save energy:
- Purchase energy efficient equipment.
- Turn off machines when not in use.
- Set your screensaver timing to 30 seconds.
- Screen savers do not reduce a monitors energy consumption. Use an automatic setting for sleep mode or simply turn it off.
- Switch your computer to a low power mode. This not only saves energy but also allows the equipment to run cooler and therefore last longer.
- Use a power board that can be turned off with one switch (or automatically), this will save energy as the AC adapter draws power continuously even when the laptop is not plugged into the adapter.
- Turn off your computer when leaving for lunch or at the end of the day.
- Switching IT equipment on and off will not affect the life of the machine, this is a common misconception.
- Consider purchasing a laptop next time you upgrade, laptops use much less energy than desktop computers.
