Green IT - Project Verte
This Green Project will replace old, out-of-warranty University computers, with new state-of-the-art hardware. The project aims to prove that new technology saves the University considerable electricity and maintenance costs, and offers additional benefits to staff, such as increased productivity.
Faculty/School/Unit: Services & Resources, Technology Services
Project Goals & Objectives
- Reduce electricity consumption of computers (relative to old technology)
- Reduce the cost of resolving hardware faults due to computers that are out of warranty
- Demonstrate the benefits of new technology on the productivity of staff
Green Project Fund: $7,000
Payback Period: 26 years
The key drawbacks of utilising old computers are:
- Energy efficiency is very poor, and therefore costly to the University
- As there is no warranty, hardware faults are expensive and time-consuming to resolve
- Specifications are significantly lower than current hardware, therefore there is reduced productivity for users
- Computers are incompatible with newer operating systems, software and peripheral devices, therefore Technology Services cannot provide full support for such devices, which causes delays to fault-finding.
