Water

We all know that good quality water is essential to sustain critical activities such as for drinking and washing. However, for other activities such as irrigation of landscapes, growing crops, mechanical and other domestic uses, can we find other sources of water that match the water quality requirements of the activity?

The University of Adelaide is working hard to address this question and come up with solutions to our specific water requirements.

For example, we have recently installed a separate irrigation system for parts of our lower campus that will utilise treated wastewater from the Glenelg to Adelaide Pipeline (GAP).

Another example is in our 6 star ‘Green Star’ building Ingkarni Wardli. The building has been designed to capture rainwater and use it for toilet flushing and also in cooling towers for air conditioning.

What you can do:

  • Identify high water use processes, eg lab or field work (ask your supervisor if this can be process can be changed) or contact us.
  • Take short showers – 2 - 5mins is plenty!
  • Re-use grey water from your shower and washing machine to water the garden.
  • Utilise rain water for drinking – it tastes great!
  • Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth or washing the dishes.
  • Report a dripping tap - call 8313 4008.
