Our Commitment
The Office of Sustainability recognises the existing and irreversible impacts of climate change. Our mission is to provide an example of outstanding ethical behaviour by reducing negative impacts on the environment and foster a sustainable culture on campus.
By practising and promoting environmentally responsible behaviours, minimising and mitigating the ecological and social impacts of its day-to-day operations, and integrating sustainability in teaching and research outcomes, the University can have a positive impact on its graduates, staff, and wider community. The principles that guide the University’s commitment to sustainability are:
1. Sustainability Knowledge
- All graduates, regardless of degree received, understand how they can contribute to creating a more sustainable world.
- Undergraduate and postgraduate students in any discipline have access to interdisciplinary courses related to sustainability knowledge. Students are challenged to grapple with the complex issues posed by sustainability as future leaders and members of the community.
- Our research will assist in tackling the complex, multi-disciplinary problems involved in moving towards a more sustainable world.
- Our sustainability objectives, targets and performance will be published, reviewed and evaluated to facilitate open, transparent engagement with the community.
2. Participation by All
- Each member of the University is empowered to influence the social, economic, and environmental values that comprise sustainability.
- Staff and students are encouraged and rewarded for contributing to and advancing our commitment to sustainability.
3. Our Campus Environment
- Sustainable practices are embedded into all aspects of campus and serve as an example to the global community.
- The health, productivity, and safety of the University community is promoted through design and maintenance of our campus environment.
- Resources are used efficiently and responsibly with regard to future generations.
- Our sustainable procurement practices are shared by our external partners and suppliers.
- We exceed legislative requirements and proactively engage with external stakeholders.
- Alternative, more sustainable transport options are encouraged and supported by the University’s policies and campus infrastructure.
