English for Professionals
English for Professionals is a part time intensive course for people who have advanced level proficiency in English (equivalence IELTS 6). The course further develops English language proficiency and focuses on the skills and strategies required to advance in an Australian professional career.
Who will this course benefit?
The course is most suitable for people of non-English speaking backgrounds who want
a successful professional career in Australia. You may be a skilled migrant, a current or
past overseas student or currently working as a professional.
To succeed in a professional career in Australia requires high level English skills, generally
equating to an IELTS average score of 7 and above. Australian permanent visa and
citizenship requirements are also placing a greater emphasis on English language skills.
What does the course involve?
English for Professionals is a part time intensive course run over 10 weeks. Classes are
held on Saturdays 10.00 am - 2.30 pm and two evenings, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30 pm - 9.30 pm each week. It is expected that you spend an equal amount of time on out of classroom projects and personal study.
The teaching methodology is based on a communicative and interactive approach, with participants doing pair work, group tasks and oral presentations. A wide range readings are used and participants are encouraged to ask and respond to questions, participate in discussions and relate their own real life experiences. Materials
are drawn from a range of sources including websites, textbooks, journals and newspapers, television and radio.
Most materials used are Australian and reflect the communication skills needed by
professionals in a multicultural society.
Course content includes:
• macro skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking)
• Australian business culture/cultural differences
• globalisation
• business ethics
• meeting rituals and routines
• employment - recruitment, job applications, interviews
and advancement
• computer research skills
• presentation skills
• negotiation skills
• business correspondence conventions - emails,
memos, formal letters, reports, agendas and minutes
• company documentation.
Course outcomes:
At the completion of the course, you will have:

Entry Criteria
Participants for this program need to be able to demonstrate that their level of English language proficiency enables them to manage without difficulty in all aspects of daily life ie social, recreational, community and commerce. At this level, the range of vocabulary available is sufficient to broadly convey meaning.
Listening: Can generally follow the main points of group discussions, meetings, lectures, electronic media
Speaking: Can participate in discussions, make presentations and respond to questions
Reading: Can get the essential meaning of most correspondence, semi-technical materials and non-specialised textbooks
Writing: Can convey clear meaning in most formal and informal communications

A minimum IELTS score of 6 or equivalent.
