Pre-Enrolment English Program (PEP)

A direct entry pathway to undergraduate or postgraduate University study.

The award winning Pre-Enrolment English Program (PEP) is specifically designed to ensure that you are well prepared to meet the academic expectations of studying at the University of Adelaide and it is one of the best ways to prepare for an exciting and fulfilling academic experience.

The PEP provides an alternative entry pathway for prospective students who have received offers to the University of Adelaide conditional upon English proficiency. On successful completion of the PEP, these students are granted direct entry into the University.

The PEP also provides an excellent preparation for study for international students who already have the required English language proficiency score for entry into the University of Adelaide or another Australian university.

About the Course

The PEP is an interactive, task-based course. This means that instead of just sitting passively in a classroom students learn by:

  • undertaking project work
  • actively investigating the academic culture of the University
  • interviewing members of the local, business and university community
  • developing research and academic writing skills and reporting findings in written form
  • listening and notetaking in lectures
  • participating in tutorials and presenting academic seminars
  • reflecting on, and developing action plans for personal language progress.

At the end of the course students submit a researched paper and deliver an oral presentation on their work as well as completeing an exam essay. Entry into the University of Adelaide is dependent upon successful completion of the course components.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, students develop:

  • a willingness to speak out and participate actively in class, including group study sessions
  • skills to succeed in self-directed study
  • an understanding of Australian tertiary academic styles of thinking, learning and presentation of ideas
  • solid written skills in English, including reports and discussion essays
  • familiarity with, and confidence in, accessing student facilities and services, and being comfortable about joining in the life of your department
  • great friends with whom to share your study experience
