Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Genetics

Sue Carthew | Bill BreedSteve Cooper | Melanie Lancaster

Research within the group spans three key areas related to ecology:

  • Conservation biology: including the impacts of habitat degradation and fragmentation on fauna and threatened species conservation
  • Mammal ecology: with an emphasis on the ecology of possums and gliders and small ground-dwelling species inhabiting semi-arid mallee regions
  • Plant-pollinator interactions: with a particular interest in the role of mammals (including small possums) as pollinators

Current Research Projects

Conservation genetics and socio-ecology of marsupials in fragmented populations

Socioecology of the yellow-bellied glider

Population genetics and socioecology of long-eared bats (Nyctophilus)

Systematics and biogeography of freetail bats (Mormopterus)

Ecology of the Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis)

The impact of exotic weeds on the persistence of the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot

Potential impacts of mineral exploration tracks on small fauna

Ecology of reintroduced mainland tammar wallabies

Ecology of mallee fauna
