Postgraduates Publication Workshop

4th December 2012
Macbeth Lecture Theatre, Badger Laboratories

This workshop was designed to introduce and explain the scientific publications process to postgraduate students, in particular from a journal's perspective.

Reputable science is published in peer-reviewed journals - this workshop exposed the whole process to students; including:

  • how papers are handled by the journal
  • what editors are looking for
  • the review process and its editorial importance
  • how to select an appropriate journal
  • journal rankings
  • tips on writing successful papers

The workshop comprised a presentation by Professor Andy Austin, Editor-in-Chief of Invertebrate Systematics, member of CSIRO Publishing's Board of Standards, and Associate Editor, Systematic Entomology. This will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by Assoc Prof Phill Cassey (Nature Index Panellist and Editor, Australian Journal of Zoology) and involving Assoc Prof Steve Cooper (Editor, Australian Journal of Zoology), Professor Bronwyn Gillanders (Associate Editor, Marine and Freshwater Research), and Dr Jeremy Austin (Associate Editor, Diversity and Distributions).
