Postgraduate Forum - May 2010
Tree Planting Day
The third Postgraduate Forum was a tree planting day held on Saturday 29 May.
The focus of the tree planting day was to assist one of the large-scale revegetation projects being undertaken in the Murray-Darling Basin. Postgraduates planted 2 native, widespread, keystone mallee species, Red Mallee (Eucalyptus socialis) and Yorrell or White Mallee (E. gracilis) at Yookamurra Sanctuary.
The project is part of Martin Breed's postgraduate studies of interactions between plant spatial isolation due to habitat fragmentation and local adaptation, and how these factors affect genetic "quality" of seeds, genetic connectivity, mating patterns, germination success and seedling vigour for current and future climates.
Martin's PhD project aims to build on current seed sourcing and restoration techniques and to progress seed collecting strategies used by revegetation practitioners, landholders and community groups to facilitate the creation of evolutionary resilient communities.
