Environmental Decision Support Systems

Sustainable management of natural resources involves complex interactions of bio-physical, environmental, economic and social factors, so that distillation of management options can be complicated by over-lapping considerations and confusion around management objectives. Decision support systems (DSS) offer a technique for relatively objective assessment of options and outcomes which can make selection of management options more transparent and defensible.

The Landscape Futures Program has applied this methodology to a range of environmental management issues, for example to the Spencer Gulf and West Coast prawn fishery to recommend sustainable levels of fishing.

Projects have developed under two major research themes:

  • Vegetation and wildlife habitats and biodiversity
