Animal Ethics Training Course

The Animal Ethics Committees of the University of Adelaide and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science jointly held their annual one day training course - The use of animals in science: ethical and practical considerations, on 5 March 2009.

This annual course is particularly aimed at new users ie staff and honours/postgraduate students including those at other institutions, but is of interest and value to animal users generally. The broad object of the program is to draw attention to some of the ethical questions that must be considered when scientific and teaching activities relating to the conditional use of animals is proposed. There is particular emphasis on the responsibilities involved and on the importance of compliance with the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes - 7th Edition 2004. In addition the program raises wider issues in relation to the humane use of animals. The 2009 Program can be viewed/downloaded here.

The University of Adelaide must ensure that staff and students are aware of their responsibilities under the Code. It is expected that all new University of Adelaide animal users will attend this educational program. Evidence of attendance at this and other animal use training will be increasingly necessary.
