Q: UG - Does the University of Adelaide offer any Bridging Courses?

Answer:

Yes, in Mathematics and Chemistry.

Mathematics

The Mathematics Learning Service (MLS) provides bridging courses, workshops, and a "Drop-In-Centre" on the North Terrace campus for students to consult tutors.

The MLS offers three bridging courses designed for students seeking to refresh or learn more mathematics:

  • MathsStart: a flexible learning program mixing 'take home' notes and workshops at approximately SACE Stage 1 (Year 11) level which can be held throughout the year.
  • MathsTrack: a flexible delivery learning program designed to cover topics from SACE Stage 2, Mathematical Studies (formerly Mathematics 1).

These courses are also open to current University students who see the need arising in their courses for a better background in Mathematics. MathsStart and MathsTrack are free to current University of Adelaide students.

Details are available from the Mathematics Learning Service. Contact them by telephone on 8303 5862, drop in and see them upstairs on level 1 of the Schulz Building, or email mls@adelaide.edu.au

Chemistry

Aduchem Pty Ltd offers an Introductory Course aimed at those who wish to enrol in first year chemistry or biology courses at the University of Adelaide, but who have never studied chemistry at SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) or who have attempted SACE Stage 2 Chemistry but did not obtain a satisfactory result. Students who have not taken SACE Stage 2 Chemistry are able to enrol in first year chemistry courses such as Foundations of Chemistry 1A or Foundations of Chemistry 1A (Pre-Vet, however these courses assume a knowledge of SACE Stage 2 Chemistry.

The course aims to overcome some of the difficulties which are experienced by less prepared students who enrol in Science, Engineering, Health Science and Agricultural Science programs (including Viticulture, Oenology, Environmental Management and Environmental Science). In a short course of this kind it is impossible to provide the same experience as a year of SACE Stage 2 Chemistry, but it is possible to cover some of the background assumed by the first year chemistry courses.

The course runs for 2 weeks in the summer break from Monday 9th to Friday 20th of February 2009, from 9 am to 3 pm each day at a cost of AUD$475. If you require further information or advice about the course, please contact Dr Gerald Laurence:
