Q: What is the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT)?Answer:The UMAT is used to assist in the selection of students into medicine and health science degree programs at various universities. UMAT is designed to assess general attributes and skills gained through prior experience and learning; specifically, the acquisition of skills in critical thinking and problem solving, interaction with others and abstract non-verbal reasoning. These personal qualities are considered important to the study and later practise of professions in the health sciences. UMAT is not curriculum based and presupposes no particular subjects of study at secondary level. It does not require any knowledge or skills in mathematics or sciences, or in any other area of the curriculum. It is designed to complement your academic results not to replicate them, so there is little benefit to be gained from cramming or coaching. Some familiarity with the question types typically presented in UMAT may be an advantage. For this reason two example questions from each of the three UMAT sections are provided in the UMAT Information Booklet. UMAT is available to any student whose educational level at the time of sitting the test is year 12 (final year of secondary schooling) or higher. Students who are currently in year 11 are not eligible to sit the UMAT. The UMAT is held once a year, usually at the end of July, Australia wide. You need to register to sit the UMAT by mid June of the same year.
