Albitisation and Hydrothermal Breccias in the Proterozoic Basement of South Australia

This excursion takes you to the Palaeoproterozoic Curnamona Craton, host to the world class super giant deposit of Broken Hill. In the Curnamona Craton we will be looking at regional scale alteration patterns that have altered large volumes of rock to a mineralogy dominated by albite. Associated with this albitisation are large, intrusive, hydrothermal breccias consisting of albitised clasts in a matrik of Ca-Mg-Fe silicates (actinolite, clinopyroxene), magnetite, quartz, albite, and apatite.

Schedule: 5 days, leaving Saturday, April 18th 8:00am returning wednesday April 22nd in the evening

Accommodation: simple but comfortable accommodation in "Shearer's Quarters" on outback stations.

A visit to the Broken Hill mine may be possible but cannot be confirmed as yet.

Iron Oxide Copper Gold Mineralisation in the Olympic Province

One of the biggest geological attrations in South Australia are the Iron-Oxide-Copper-Gold deposits such as the super-giant Olympic Dam and the recently developed Prominent Hill. This excursion will visit these two sites with the possibility of an underground visit at Olympic Dam and an inspection of hte open pit at Prominent Hill. In the core storage facilities we will be looking at the ore from these deposits in more detail.

Schedule: 5days, leaving sunday April 19th in the morning, returning thursday, April 23 in the evening
