University of Adelaide Augustus Short Scholarships Appeal
Changing lives through scholarships
Today, sixteen per cent of University of Adelaide students come from disadvantaged backgrounds – remote or rural locations, or circumstances of financial distress.
Many of them are only able to study because of scholarships supported by our generous donors, however, for every student who applied for an Augustus Short Scholarship in 2016, there were nine who missed out. Your gift will help us help more students.
“The Augustus Short Scholarship provides financial support to undergraduate students in every year of their study. Your gift to this year's appeal will ensure we are able to provide educational opportunities to these deserving students; and who knows, our next scholarship recipient might be the one who finds a cure for cancer, or they might inspire your grandchildren as a great teacher, or perhaps we will graduate the engineer of a space shuttle that will take humankind to Mars.” Professor Mike Brooks, Interim Vice-Chancellor and President.
Zabi, a student whose life has been changed by a scholarship
Zabi was one the first recipients of the Refugee and Humanitarian Scholarship. Now in his second year of a Bachelor of Economics (Advanced), he sees his education as an opportunity that has truly changed his life.
“After I was given the opportunity to live in Australia as a refugee, I really wanted to make a difference and knew to do that I needed to have a university education."
"By studying economics, I hope to focus on research that will help me to understand and develop strategies to close the gap between the wealthy and the poor. I would not be able to do this without the scholarship. I can’t wait to see my research make a difference in the world."
Cathryn is now making her mark on the world as a Senior Policy Officer in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet
Raised in a single-parent household, Cathryn’s mother passed away from cancer as she was entering her second year of university. On top of the grief of losing her mother, Cathryn had to face finding the money to continue her studies on top of paying rent, bills and living expenses.
“Like most students I really needed some financial support, despite working as much as I could to get by. I didn’t have parents or grandparents to support me."
Today, Cathryn is a proud alumna of the University, graduating with a double degree in law and commerce. The profound impact of her scholarship is one that will remain with her for life.
"It was incredibly comforting to know there are people out there who want to support students and to see the next generation of graduates succeed. As much as I wanted to do well for myself, I also wanted to be successful for the donors who were generously supporting me."
Your gift will make an immediate impact, which will be felt for generations to come. When you donate to the Augustus Short Scholarships Appeal, you can be confident that 100% of your gift will go to students who need it most. Please give today.
