Message from the Dean
Towards the end of last year Academic Board approved the establishment of a Register of Eligible Research Supervisors. This was seen as a necessary quality assurance measure for a research-intensive University and a means of ensuring that all supervisors have the necessary knowledge of policy and generic supervision issues to enable them to advise students effectively about their candidature. This policy document can be viewed on the University policy web-site at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/
It is the intention of the Graduate Centre to have the register operational by the beginning of March, and Executive Deans will shortly be sent a list of all the supervisors active within their Faculties, who are eligible for recommendation to this register. Processes for creating new supervisors will change, and the various forms have been modified to reflect the additional data required. These will be posted on the AGC web-site in time for the introduction of the register.
The 2007 edition of the Research Student Handbook is currently at the printers and will be available for the Semester One Induction Program on Friday 23 February. All new HDR students will be given a printed copy of the Handbook, and additional copies will be forwarded to PGCs. The web version of the Handbook will be available in the same format used in 2006, and this too will be on-line, ready for induction.
In keeping with the need for good quality assurance, training programs for new supervisors and postgraduate coordinators have been extensively updated, and will operate this year under the direction of Dr Ian Green. In addition I shall be conducting a training session for Heads of Schools at this year’s research retreat, and this will be focussing on issues such as completion rates and the supervisor register. It is also my intention to visit as many as possible of our adjuncts and title-holders so that they too may become familiar with the University’s new expectations.
That, and the RQF, should make for a busy year!
Effective Supervision Program 2007
The Researcher Education & Development unit will in 1st semester 2007 offer an Effective Supervision program consisting of a series of 5 workshops. Topics, times and venues are listed below.
All staff are welcome to attend all or any of these sessions.
All new staff are expected to attend the introductory session.
Note that for the purpose of entry to the Register of Supervisors, full participation in the Effective Supervison program is equivalent to two years of co-supervision. Full participation means attending and contributing to all sessions, and undertaking a research project in the field of researcher education and development, to be reported on at the final workshop.
Further information, registration forms etc. will shortly be available through
the Adelaide Graduate
Centre website. And please feel free to contact the facilitators, Ian
Green and Margaret Cargill,
to discuss any aspect of the program or your participation in it.

Can you Help
I am seeking two senior research students from each Faculty to participate in panel discussion sessions at the upcoming Postgraduate Research Induction of Friday, 23 February 2007 (11:25am to 1:00pm – with light refreshments to follow). Panels will be Faculty based, with each comprising a senior and experienced supervisor, a staff member from the Adelaide Graduate Centre, a subject librarian and two research students from the relevant Faculty. It is expected that each panel member will talk for about 10 minutes on their area of expertise with a general discussion and question and answer session to follow.
The student talks always receive very positive feedback from Induction participants and are considered one of the most valuable parts of the Induction Program. This is a great opportunity for you to provide your fellow students with a few tips and tricks to navigate their way through their research degree.
If you think you might be interested in participating in a panel and would like further information about what’s involved, please contact Susan Western on 8303 3882 or by email to susan.western@adelaide.edu.au by 15 February 2007.
