Postgraduate Research Induction – Semester 2, 2008The Adelaide Graduate Centre’s next Induction Program will be held on Friday, 25 July 2008. The Induction, which is compulsory for all commencing PhD and Masters by Research students, provides a valuable orientation to life as a research student at The University of Adelaide. Supervisors and Senior Research Students are needed to participate in panel discussion sessions at the upcoming Postgraduate Research Induction on Friday, 25 July 2008 (from approximately 11:45am to 1:00pm). Panels are Faculty based, with each comprising a senior and experienced Supervisor, a Staff Member from the Adelaide Graduate Centre, a Research Librarian and two Research Students from each of the five groups listed above. Panel members present a talk on their area of expertise to new Postgraduate Research Students, concluding with a general discussion, question and answer session. The discussion group sessions always receive very positive feedback from Induction participants and are considered one of the most valuable parts of the Induction program. what’s involved, please contact Work Rights for Student Visa HoldersWork Rights for Student Visa Holders From 26 April 2008, people who are granted a student visa will automatically receive permission to work (on a paid or voluntary basis) for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and unlimited hours when on vacation. People granted student visas before 26 April 2008 can still apply separately for permission to work, as detailed at: http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students/working_while_studying/how-to-apply.htm Please note however, that if you are a scholarship holder, the conditions of your scholarship award limit the amount of work you can do, to a maximum of 8 hours during the working week. Researcher Education and Development: RED for studentsDue to popular demand, we have scheduled another 'Preparing and Presenting Seminars' workshop for postgraduates to be held on Thursday 5th June 11:00-1:00. The workshop will focus on the preparation of effective visual materials, logical organisation of information and self-presentation skills for the oral presentation of academic research. The workshop is open to all HDR students except those who are currently enrolled in the IBP-R. Approximately 75- 80% of Fulbright Postgraduate Scholars are now undertaking research towards to their Australian PhD. The benefits to the Fulbright Scholars and their Australian university include:
It provides easy and cost effective access to U.S. research institutions – Scholars are welcomed as Visiting Research Fellows. Fulbright Scholars undertaking research do not
Scholars arrange affiliation through personal approaches to U.S. researchers, or links their supervisors or universities have with U.S. universities. This also provides the opportunity for Australian universities and research groups to establish or enhance their collaborative links in the United States. There are a range of selection criteria for Fulbright Scholarships, of which academic merit is but one. While first class honours is common amongst scholars, Fulbrights have also been granted to second class honours applicants. Applications for the 2009 Fulbright Scholarships close 31 August 2008. Scholars can commence their Fulbright program any time between 1 July 2009 and the 30 June 2010. AusAID's Australian Leadership Award Scholarship Intake for 2009Applications are considered annually on a regionally competitive basis. Selection is based on leadership qualities and academic merit.
