antiTHESIS 2009 INTERDISCIPLINARY GRADUATE STUDENT SYMPOSIUM

CALL FOR PAPERS - FEAR

Fear is one of the most potent forces affecting humankind. Both a survival mechanism and an instrument of manipulation, it divides and unites, mobilises and paralises. Fear can be a rational response to danger or panic in the face of the unknown.

antiTHESIS seeks papers exploring the concept of fear to be presented at a symposium on Friday, 10 July 2009, at the University of Melbourne's Graduate Centre. We invite graduate students and academic researchers from all disciplines within the arts, humanities and social sciences to consider fear in its many manifestations, past and present. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
  • Fear as a political tool
  • Race, immigration and border control
  • Fear of the 'Other'
  • Sedition and censorship
  • The aesthetics of fear (horror, suspense, the Gothic)
  • Literary and artistic responses to fear
  • Monuments and memorials to trauma/ terror
  • Creativity, the canon, and the anxiety of influence
  • Fear and mental health
  • Inhibitions and aversions - fear of intimacy, failure, success
  • Superstitions and phobias
  • Religious belief
  • Economic crisis and fears for material security
  • Responses to the fear of climate change
  • The role of the media in generating fear
  • Terrorism and paranoia
  • Fear, crime, deviance and social control
  • Fear's opposite: courage, heroism and martyrdom

Symposium papers should aim to be 20 minutes in length with 10 minutes of audience Q&A. To submit a proposal for a presentation, please send a 300-word abstract and short biographical note (100 words maximum) to editor.antithesis@gmail.com by Monday, 1 June 2009. All proposals will be considered and authors notified by 8 June 2009.

A selection of papers will be published in the 20th anniversary issue of antiTHESIS. antiTHESIS is a full-refereed interdisciplinary journals based at the University of Melbourne.
