Postgraduate Research Induction – Semester 2, 2008

The Adelaide Graduate Centre’s next Induction Program will be held on Friday, 25 July 2008. The Induction, which is compulsory for all commencing PhD and Masters by Research students, provides a valuable orientation to life as a research student at The University of Adelaide.

Supervisors and Senior Research Students are needed to participate in panel discussion sessions at the upcoming Postgraduate Research Induction on Friday, 25 July 2008 (from approximately 11:45am to 1:00pm).

Panels are Faculty based, with each comprising a senior and experienced Supervisor, a Staff Member from the Adelaide Graduate Centre, a Research Librarian and two Research Students from each of the five groups listed above.

Panel members present a talk on their area of expertise to new Postgraduate Research Students, concluding with a general discussion, question and answer session. The discussion group sessions always receive very positive feedback from Induction participants and are considered one of the most valuable parts of the Induction program.

The 2008 AusBiotech-GSK Student Excellence Awards National Launch: Research to Revenue

Endeavour Awards for citizens or permanent residents of Australia

The Australian Government provides opportunities for high achieving Australian students, researchers and professionals to undertake short or long term study, research and professional development in a broad range of disciplines in participating Asia-Pacific countries.
Endeavour Research Fellowships provide financial support for postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows from Australia to undertake short-term research (4-6 months), in any field of study, in participating Asia-Pacific countries. Aimed at building international linkages and networks, these Awards provide opportunities for award holders to further develop their knowledge and skills.

Endeavour Awards for international applicants

Through the Endeavour Awards, the Australian Government provides opportunities for high achieving international students, researchers and professionals to undertake short or long term study, research and professional development in Australia in a broad range of disciplines.
The Endeavour Postgraduate Awards provide financial support for international students for up to 3 years to undertake a postgraduate qualification at a Masters or PhD level either by coursework or research in any field of study in Australia.

Fulbright Scholarships

For Postgraduate study and research in the United States
Valued up to $A40,000

A Guideline for Australian PhD Supervisors
Fulbright Scholarships can provide the opportunity for Australian citizens to undertake 8-12 months research in the United States related to their Australian PhD.

Australian PhD students can now stop the clock on their Australian Postgraduate Scholarship (APA, APIA or university based) to undertake international research through another scholarship, such as Fulbright.

Approximately 75- 80% of Fulbright Postgraduate Scholars are now undertaking research towards to their Australian PhD.

The benefits to the Fulbright Scholars and their Australian university include:

• the opportunity to work and build collaborations with leading researchers at some of the top U.S. universities;
• an international marker on their PhD and international joint publications, as a result of the experience; and
• the basis for long term ongoing international research collaborations and exchange between their U.S. host and Australian university.

It provides easy and cost effective access to U.S. research institutions – Scholars are welcomed as Visiting Research Fellows. Fulbright Scholars undertaking research do not

• need to sit U.S. university entrance exams;
• apply for admission to the U.S. university;
• or pay U.S. university tuition fees.

Scholars arrange affiliation through personal approaches to U.S. researchers, or links their supervisors or universities have with U.S. universities. This also provides the opportunity for Australian universities and research groups to establish or enhance their collaborative links in the United States.

There are a range of selection criteria for Fulbright Scholarships, of which academic merit is but one. While first class honours is common amongst scholars, Fulbrights have also been granted to second class honours applicants.

Applications for the 2009 Fulbright Scholarships close 31 August 2008. Scholars can commence their Fulbright program any time between 1 July 2009 and the 30 June 2010.

AusAID's Australian Leadership Award Scholarship Intake for 2009

Applications are considered annually on a regionally competitive basis. Selection is based on leadership qualities and academic merit. Australian High Commissions and Embassies consider applications and recommend short-listed candidates to a final inter-departmental selection committee in Canberra. AusAID prefers online applications.

Applications can be submitted either:

a) Online via the ALA Scholarship online application accessed via the AusAID website http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/ala.cfm
b) By mail to the appropriate Australian High Commission/Embassy or managing contractor

Application forms can be downloaded from the ALA Scholarship page on the AusAID website or sought from the Australian High Commission/Embassy in each eligible country.

How to apply:

a) Obtain a letter of unconditional offer from a participating institution
b) Thoroughly review the terms and conditions of the ALA Scholarship via the AusAID website to ensure you understand the scope of the scholarship offer.
c) After 01 April 2008, download the scholarship application information and if necessary the paper-based application and from ALA Scholarship webpage.
d) Collect the required documentation and information including referee reports, certified copies of previous academic qualifications and proof of English language proficiency
e) Submit your online or paper-based application before close of business, 30 June 2008. (Paper based applications must be received at the appropriate Australian High Commission or Embassy by 30 June 2008)
