Postgraduate Research Induction – 24 July 2009
The Adelaide Graduate Centre’s next Induction Program will be held on Friday, 24 July 2009. The Induction, which is compulsory for all commencing PhD and Masters by Research students, provides a valuable orientation to life as a research student at The University of Adelaide.

Recruitment for Speakers Session 2 of Postgraduate Research Induction
Friday, 24 July 2009 (from approximately 11:45am to 1:00pm)
The Postgraduate Research Induction is fast approaching and the Adelaide Graduate Centre is URGENTLY looking for Supervisor and Student participants.
The Induction Program is a positive introduction to students new to postgraduate study and the program relies on the involvement of volunteers to help make it a success.
Session 2 panels are Faculty based, with each comprising a senior and experienced Supervisor, a Staff Member from the Adelaide Graduate Centre, a Research Librarian and two Research Students. Help in recruiting the required Supervisors and Research Students in your Faculty/School/Discipline is appreciated.
Supervisors and Students (2nd or 3rd year) from the following Faculty Groups are needed:
- Sciences B (School of Chemistry and Physics ) (1 Supervisor AND 2 Students)
- Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (Supervisor only required)
Panel members present a talk on their area of expertise to new Postgraduate Research Students, concluding with a general discussion, question and answer session.
The format for the session is that each panel member will give a presentation/talk followed by a group discussion to give the audience an opportunity to ask questions of the panel, raise any issues of concern and exchange information.
Supervisor (20 minute) talks can include, for example:
- Core Component
- Major Review
- Meetings with Supervisors (panel supervision, conflicting advice, notes of meetings)
- Problems with supervisors
- Role of PGC, raising of issues
- Resource entitlements, forms
- Publications
- Ethics - as appropriate to the Faculty
- IP, Commercialisation - as appropriate to the Faculty
- Stats - as appropriate to the Faculty
- Graduate Centre web site
Student (10 minute) talks can include, for example:
- how to tackle the Core Component of the Structured Program
- how to make the most of your supervisory relationship(s)
- who can help if there are problems
- professional development opportunities
- time management
- publication writing
- managing the ups and downs of research student life

The University of Adelaide's English Language Centre runs a course English for Professionals. It is a part time intensive course run over 10 weeks for people of non-English speaking backgrounds who want a successful professional career in Australia. The course further develops English language proficiency in a business context and focuses on the skills and strategies required to advance in an Australian professional career.

The General Sir John Monash Awards
The Monash Awards are awarded to outstanding Australian citizens graduating from Australian universities to enable them to undertake postgraduate study abroad at the worlds best universities, appropriate to their field of study.
Study programs which lead to the highest academic research degree generally accepted in that field of study are supported by the Monash Foundation. Normally this would be a PhD or a DPhil or equivalent research doctoral degree. Only in exceptional circumstances would the Foundation consider supporting an applicant to undertake a Masters degree which extends the applicants capability for a special program.
Applications close: 31 August 2009.
Benefits: up to AUD150,000 over three years.

Business Establishment Scholarships worth up to $10,000!
The Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation and Innovation Centre (ECIC), has 4 scholarships for Postgraduates + 2 scholarships for a technology based idea + 2 scholarships for PhD's near completion to support the development of an innovative entrepreneurial business idea.
If you have a desire to develop your own business, whilst studying via our sponsored Graduate Entrepreneurial Program (GEP) then register now! During the course of the scholarship you will obtain a Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship or Science & Technology and Commercialisation whilst being supported in a fully furnished office at the Thebarton Incubator .
A free seminar will be held on 28th July 2009, 'How to turn a great idea into an even greater application ' to explain the application process and business development initiatives. In addition Dr Allan O'Connor Academic Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship accompanied by Mr Antonio Dottore the Academic Director of Science & Technology Commercialisation will equip you with basic skills and knowledge to manage new venture creation processes and business planning.
