Message from the Dean

There are quite a few changes taking place in the postgraduate research area. Firstly I would like to direct your attention to the new web based version of the Research Student Handbook which can be accessed via the sidebar on the AGC home page. Ms Libby Hamilton has created this document and I am sure her hard work will be of great use to many of you. You can of course still access the print version at our website [look under Research Student Handbook – 2007 (Printed Version) on the main menu] but the new web based version is more readily searched and more comprehensively indexed. As always we would welcome your comments and suggestions for improvements.

Starting this month Faculties will be provided with new monthly up dates reporting HDR load, number of completions to date for the year, and the number of candidates under examination. Hopefully this will enable Post Graduate Coordinators to better monitor progress of students as well as progress towards meeting completion targets.

The next REDC meeting will be interesting and possibly rather long. The committee will be considering draft new regulations to give Faculties and supervisors greater freedom in regard to choosing the most appropriate format for PhD theses. In addition it will be looking at draft rule changes prompted by a recent meeting with Post Graduate Coordinators and aimed at actively encouraging timely completions of research degrees. I am particularly grateful to those PGCs who attended the last workshop and contributed to a spirited discussion on the subject of timely completions.

By the time this newsletter goes to print many of you will have read the briefing paper from the Vice Chancellor, in Inside Adelaide, outlining the key decisions reached at the most recent senior management retreat. The commitment to expand postgraduate students has a number of facets. Apart from the issue of scholarships and the move to encourage more international PhD students there is also the notion of pathways. This is something we don’t often discuss in relationship to HDR education. However it is becoming increasingly clear that the differences between our education system and those of our neighbours can no longer be ignored and that if the University is to meet the goals for growth, “pathways” will be a subject for discussion at REDC in the very near future.

Whilst I will continue my meetings with randomly chosen HDR students it has been suggested that there would be considerable merit in forming an Research Student Advisory Committee made up of the various HDR students who have been elected to Faculty Boards and School Committee’s together with a member of the Postgraduate Student Association. The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) has indicated his willingness to participate and I will be trying to set up an initial meeting in next mid semester break

Postgraduate Research Induction – Semester 2, 2007

Research Students Needed

I am seeking two senior research students from each Faculty to participate in panel discussion sessions at the upcoming Postgraduate Research Induction on Friday, 20 July 2007 (11:25am to 1:00pm – with light refreshments to follow). Panels will be Faculty based, with each comprising a senior and experienced supervisor, a staff member from the Adelaide Graduate Centre, a subject librarian and two research students from the relevant Faculty. It is expected that each panel member will talk for about 10 minutes on their area of expertise with a general discussion and question and answer session to follow.

The student talks always receive very positive feedback from Induction participants and are considered one of the most valuable parts of the Induction Program. This is a great opportunity for you to provide your fellow students with a few tips and tricks to navigate their way through their research degree.

If you are interested in participating and would like further information about what’s involved, please contact Lisa Hurcombe on 8303 3882 or email lisa.hurcombe@adelaide.edu.au by 29 June 2007.

The Adelaide Graduate Centre’s next Induction Program will be held on the morning of Friday, 20 July 2007, concluding with light refreshments for all involved. The Induction, which is compulsory for all commencing PhD and Masters by Research students, provides a valuable orientation to life as a research student at The University of Adelaide.

For further information and to confirm your attendance for the Induction, please register online, by 13 July 2007 at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/induction/index.html

Endeavour Awards:

Applications for DEST's 2008 Endeavour Awards have opened, with a closing date of 31 July. The awards fund Australian undergraduate and postgraduate students to study for a period overseas, and overseas applicants to spend some time studying in Australia. The awards include student exchanges, research fellowships and executive awards. The University is keen to receive a sizeable number of these awards, so academic staff should encourage students to apply. Details can be accessed at http://www.endeavour.dest.gov.au/summary_endeavour_awards/default.html

Commonly Asked Questions

How many papers do I need to submit my thesis by publication?
Because of the limited timeframe for the completion of a research degree and the length of time involved in publishing papers and scholarly works, it is unlikely that submission by publication will be a possibility for every candidate. The number of publication(s) that will comprise a PhD thesis or a Masters by Research thesis will vary greatly according to the discipline of study, the content of the publication(s) and where applicable, the impact factor of the journals in which they are published. In some fields of scientific research, three papers may be sufficient for a PhD, whilst in others, six may be the norm; for other fields, such as the Humanities, a single book length work may be sufficient.

Masters degrees by publication are not available in every Faculty; please consult your School or the specific academic program rules for your degree if you are unsure: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/calendar/pg
