Postgraduate Research Induction - Semester 2, 2007

Research Students Needed

I am seeking two senior research students from each Faculty to participate in panel discussion sessions at the upcoming Postgraduate Research Induction on Friday, 20 July 2007 (11:25am to 1:00pm - with light refreshments to follow). Panels will be Faculty based, with each comprising a senior and experienced supervisor, a staff member from the Adelaide Graduate Centre, a subject librarian and two research students from the relevant Faculty. It is expected that each panel member will talk for about 10 minutes on their area of expertise with a general discussion and question and answer session to follow.

The student talks always receive very positive feedback from Induction participants and are considered one of the most valuable parts of the Induction Program. This is a great opportunity for you to provide your fellow students with a few tips and tricks to navigate their way through their research degree.

If you are interested in participating and would like further information about what's involved, please contact Lisa Hurcombe on 8303 3882 or email lisa.hurcombe@adelaide.edu.au by 12 July 2007.

The Adelaide Graduate Centre's next Induction Program will be held on the morning of Friday, 20 July 2007, concluding with light refreshments for all involved. The Induction, which is compulsory for all commencing PhD and Masters by Research students, provides a valuable orientation to life as a research student at The University of Adelaide.

For further information and to confirm your attendance for the Induction, please register online, by 13 July 2007 at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/induction/index.html

8th Quality in Postgraduate Research Conference

Research Education in the New Global Environment

17 - 18 April 2008
Stamford Grand Hotel, Glenelg, South Australia

The 2008 QPR conference will be held 17-18 April, at the Stamford Grand, Glenelg. The details for the 2008 conference and the Call for Papers are now available at http://www.qpr.edu.au/2008. The deadline for papers submitted for the refereed proceeding is 15th October 2007. The deadline for abstracts for non-refereed presentations at the conference is 30th November 2007.

For the last twelve years the Quality in Postgraduate Research conferences have provided an opportunity to debate the latest policies affecting postgraduate education; to exchange views on current research and good practice in the field; and to link special staff and student interest groups. Policy makers, supervisors, postgraduate administrators, educational researchers, postgraduate students and academic developers attend the conferences. Staff and postgraduate students are encouraged to present their research on postgraduate education or to make presentations about good practice in research education at the conference. For the purposes of the conference, postgraduate research refers to higher degrees which have a substantial amount of research as a major component. For inquiries about presenting at the conference, please contact Gerry Mullins at gerry.mullins@adelaide.edu.au

You will also be able to register your interest in attending the conference at the conference web site by joining the QPR listserv or by email to the conference organisers at lejla@sapmea.asn.au

The proceedings of the previous seven Quality in Postgraduate Research Conferences, 1994-2006, are available at http://www.qpr.edu.au/. This archive provides an indication of the topics covered by the QPR conferences and is a valuable resource for prospective presenters.

Effective Supervision Program, Semester 2

The Effective Supervision Program will run again in Semester 2, with a series of 5 workshops.

Workshops commence in the third week of semester, and take place around every three weeks. There will be both evening (Tuesdays 4.30-8.00pm) and repeat daytime (Thursdays 9.30-1.00pm) sessions.

Workshops focus on key topics in the policy, practice and critical analysis of HDR supervision, and aim to give HDR supervisors an opportunity to explore new strategies and approaches. All academic staff are welcome to attend all or any of the sessions. (But please enrol with us first!)

If you are a new member of academic staff and wish to register as an HDR supervisor, you must come to the first workshop.

If you wish to be registered as a supervisor but have not yet fulfilled all the eligibility requirements, you may be able to enrol in the full program and gain credit towards registration. The full program involves participating in all five workshops and undertaking a small research project in the area of researcher education. Head of School approval is required.

Scholarship Extensions

We have always referred to the Annual Review submitted by students and supported by supervisors when considering issues raised in scholarship extension applications. Recently it has been obvious that some students are not documenting delays in their progress in the Annual Review process, however they are listing these (sometimes significant) delays in their scholarship extension applications. These reasons are therefore largely undocumented and unsupported (particularly where an Annual Review indicates that progress was very good and gives no indication of any delays whatsoever). As a result, to ensure both accurate information in the Annual Review and verification of supporting reasons for scholarship extensions, we will now only consider reasons in the scholarship extension application that are supported by information provided in the Annual Review (unless the reason falls after the last Annual Review and before the scholarship extension application). Please be aware of this when completing the Annual Review and scholarship extension forms.

When completing the extension application, the following rules must be taken into consideration:

* Reasons must be related to the research (ie experiment failure, equipment failure, access to resources), and not of a personal nature (ie sickness, family responsibilities, carer responsibilities, employment)

* Medical reasons are not acceptable (check with the Graduate Centre if there are sick leave provisions as part of your scholarship) - APAs, in certain circumstances, can provide up to 3 months paid sick leave in addition to the tenure of your award.

* Things that were foreseen prior to the commencement of candidature are not acceptable (ie department requires a piece of equipment, supervisor was on leave).

* Ensure that any set-backs are recorded in your Annual Review, as these are referred to when applications for extensions are considered. Never underestimate time lost!

If you have any concerns at all, please contact the Adelaide Graduate Centre to discuss your application.

Endeavour Awards

Applications for DEST's 2008 Endeavour Awards have opened, with a closing date of 31 July. The awards fund Australian undergraduate and postgraduate students to study for a period overseas, and overseas applicants to spend some time studying in Australia. The awards include student exchanges, research fellowships and executive awards. The University is keen to receive a sizeable number of these awards, so academic staff should encourage students to apply. Details can be accessed at http://www.endeavour.dest.gov.au/summary_endeavour_awards/default.html
