31st ATSE National Symposium

Attention: Early Career Technological Scientists And Engineers

The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) is an independent, not for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion in Australia of scientific and engineering knowledge to practical purposes. It unites Australia's most eminent scientists, engineers and applied technologists. One of its strategic objectives is to act as a think tank to identify, initiate and influence the debate on important technological issues using the broad skills of the ATSE membership across multi-discipline sectors and business links.

The Annual National Symposium of ATSE will be held at the RACV Club, Melbourne, Victoria on Monday 17 November and Tuesday 18 November 2008. This year’s topic is:

Alternative Transport Fuels for Australia

The future energy demands of rapidly-developing countries, the increasing concerns about the reliability of oil supplies and costs, the climate changes that are likely to result from burning fossil fuels and the certainty that transport will remain a major user of energy sources for many years are key issues in current thinking about future energy supplies. These concerns have led to a dramatic re-assessment of the role of alternative fuels for transportation.

This Symposium will consider the range of issues for Australia due to this growing interest in alternative transportation fuels and their varying stages of development. With the rapid development in some of these technologies it will look at them against a backdrop of short (10 years), medium (20 years) and long-range (40 years) timescales. With a view to developing a road map for the future, it will assess them against considerations such as:

  • security of supply,
  • environment,
  • economics,
  • engineering limitations, and
  • ethics.

Day One of the Symposium will feature four plenary sessions, with topics including Biofuels and fuels from Hydrogen, Natural Gas and Electricity to give a broad outline of the choices available to Australia.

On Day Two, the Symposium will examine the reality of the various fuel options presented on Day One. The following questions will be debated in concurrent workshops - Are the fuel options technically feasible? Do they meet our security of supply needs? Will they be economic? What will be the environmental and ethical impact? The outcomes of these workshops will be discussed and debated in a final plenary session on the afternoon of Day Two.

This information will then form the basis of an Executive Summary to be distributed to State and Federal Governments, industry and the community.

Thanks to the generosity of the Symposium Sponsors ATSE is pleased to provide support to enable people who are developing a career in technological sciences and engineering to attend the Symposium, to take part in the debate and contribute to the conclusions. Those awarded Early Career Symposium Fellowships will receive free registration, and support funding towards travel and accommodation.

The Early Career Symposium Fellows will be selected on the basis of merit and potential to contribute to Australia’s future. Applications are being sought through Australia’s universities, technical colleges, businesses and research organisations. Application forms and further details of the Symposium may be obtained from:

Flagship Collaboration Fund - Postgraduate Scholarships 2008/09

The National Research Flagships program is an initiative of CSIRO, designed to bring together large multidisciplinary teams to focus on Australia's major challenges and opportunities. Six Flagships were established in 2003:

  • Energy Transformed
  • Food Futures
  • Light Metals
  • Preventative Health
  • Water for a Healthy Country
  • Wealth from Oceans

Additional government funding was provided in 2007 to support the establishment of three new Flagships:

  • Climate Adaptation
  • Minerals Down Under
  • Niche Manufacturing

A portion of Flagship funding was set aside to be spent outside of CSIRO, to further enhance collaboration and to bring "the full weight of Australian scientific expertise to bear on major national challenges". This led to the creation of the Flagship Collaboration Fund.

Each year, the Fund supports postgraduate (PhD) scholarships for students co-supervised by researchers in an Australian university and CSIRO, and working on a project relevant to one of the Flagships. In 2008/09, the Fund will support up to 30 new scholarships.

Top-up scholarships are available to PhD students who have gained (or expect to gain) an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent scholarship. In certain circumstances, full scholarships are also available. International students are eligible to apply, but must be able to show evidence of admission to an Australian university.

Applications will open in mid-September and close 30 November. Each Flagship will list a number of priority areas of research in which it is particularly seeking applications. These priority areas, along with the Fund guidelines and links to the application forms, will be available on the web at: http://www.csiro.au/FlagshipScholarships.

For further information, contact CSIRO Careers on 1300 301 509, the Flagship Collaboration Fund project manager on 02 6276 6183, or the relevant collaboration contact for each Flagship listed on the web at http://www.csiro.au/org/ps1e.html.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I will be on leave during the Annual Review do I still have to do it?
A. Yes, the annual review is compulsory for all Research students who are active in candidature or on leave of absence. Postgraduate Co-ordinators or Principal Supervisors can request an extension for students on sick leave by emailing Kim Crawford.

Q. Examination timelines
A. The Graduate Centre would like to remind that if an extended deadline for examination has been negotiated with an examiner to please indicate this on the Nomination of Examiners form, as reminders will be sent if a report is not received within the 5 week deadline. It is also suggested that the student be advised of an extended examination period (although not the details of the examiner) to avoid unnecessary stress.
