2007 Annual Review of Progress
With the exception of students who commence in August, September or October this year, all research students, including those currently on leave of absence, are required to complete the 2007 Annual Review of Progress.
Please note it is your responsibility to ensure that your Annual Review is submitted to the Graduate Centre by the due date of 31 October. If you have not received a Review package please contact the Graduate Centre immediately so that a package can be forwarded to you.
You should make an appointment with your supervisor(s) to discuss your progress and another with your Postgraduate Coordinator, or Head of School/Discipline (which your supervisor(s) may wish to attend) for a few days later. After your supervisor(s) and Postgraduate Coordinator or Head of School/Discipline have discussed your progress with you and all parties have completed the relevant sections of the form, you should sign the form and lodge it with the Graduate Centre.

A few places have come up in the Emerging Researchers in Ageing 2007 program so don’t miss out! Abstracts should be submitted ASAP to ensure you don’t miss the opportunity (by 14/9/07 at the latest). This is your chance to showcase your work to potential future employers, and to take advantage of the professional networking opportunities offered by a conference of this calibre.
This year Professor Helen Bartlett will also be chairing a workshop on life after the PhD (yes, there is life after the PhD, so come along and hear about what you have to look forward to).

Research School of Humanities Public Lecture
Title: I.A Richards and the Future of Literary Criticism
By Professor James Chandler,
University of Chicago
Date and Venue: 19 September, 2007, 4.00-5.30pm
Conference Room, Old Canberra House.
Professor James Chandler is Barbara E. & Richard J. Franke Distinguished Service Professor in English Language & Literature and the Committee on Cinema & Media Studies at the University of Chicago. He is also the Director of the Mellon Foundation-funded Franke Institute for the Humanities at the same University. James Chandler's research and teaching interests are centered in the romantic movement in England and include 18th and 19th century poetry; the rise of historicism, the concept of the "period," the "case," and the historical novel; relations between politics and literature, history and criticism; romantic fiction; the Scottish Enlightenment; Scottish and Irish literatures and cultures; the long history of sentiment; and film. He is the author of the celebrated England in 1819: the Politics of Literary Culture and the Case of Romantic Historicism (University of Chicago Press, 1998). He is currently writing The Sympathetic Eye: A Brief History of Sentiment, a project that aims to set the work of Frank Capra and of the "golden age" of Hollywood in much longer perspectives of cultural and intellectual history than one finds in existing scholarship, and The New Cambridge History of English Romantic Literature, a 300,000-word edited volume now being revised for the first time since the first edition early in the 20th-century. He is also general editor (with Marilyn Butler) of Cambridge Studies in Romanticism and (with David Bromwich and Lionel Gossman) of Literature in History, a book series for Princeton University Press.
In his talk at RSH, Professor Chandler will discuss the legacy of I.A Richards in the context of challenges to literary criticism in the 2ist century.
