New Master of Philosophy Program in 2010

A new Master of Philosophy program will commence from 1 January 2010 and has been created to provide a single Masters level research degree, which, like the PhD is immediately recognisable to employers and others as a benchmark of students standard of achievement in research. It also provides a unique opportunity for eligible students with a flexible entry pathway into this program direct from a Bachelor degree awarded by an Australian University without the need to complete Honours. Successful completion of the Master of Philosophy program will provide a pathway to entry into a Doctor of Philosophy program.

From 1 January 2011, this program will supersede all named Masters by Research Degrees currently available at the University of Adelaide. It will be the only Master degree at the University that meets the provisions of the Research Training Scheme (RTS).

During the 2010 transition period, it will still be possible for applicants to apply for a place in a named Master by Research program in accordance with the relevant 2009 program rules. However, as the new Master of Philosophy program is the University’s preferred option, applicants are encouraged to apply for this program.

Applicants are advised to contact the relevant postgraduate coordinator if they wish to discuss their most suitable option.

Procedures for lodgement of applications for the Master of Philosophy or one of the superseded named Master by Research programs are as follows:

Applicants Who Have Completed Or Are Completing An Honours Degree In 2009

Applicants who have completed or are completing an Honours program and are applying for the Master of Philosophy or a named Master Research Degree are required to lodge the application for admission and/or scholarship by 31 October 2009 to be considered for entry in 2010. The form 'Admission and/or Scholarship Application form Higher Degree by Research' is available at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/m_phil.html

These applicants will be eligible to apply for all relevant available scholarships.

Applicants Who Do Not Have And Will Not Complete An Honours Degree In 2009

Applicants who do not have and will not complete an Honours degree in 2009 and who wish to apply for the Master of Philosophy program must complete a separate application form which must be lodged by 13 November 2009 to be considered for entry in 2010. The form 'Admission and/or Scholarship for Master of Philosophy No Honours' is available at: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/graduatecentre/m_phil.html

Eligible Master of Philosophy applicants will be able to compete for a limited number of scholarships valued at $20,000 pa tax free (subject to funding).

To be eligible to compete for the dedicated Master of Philosophy scholarships, applicants must:

  • be an Australian/NZ citizen or Australian Permanent resident and
  • be applying for admission to the Master of Philosophy on the basis of a bachelor level qualification.

International applicants will continue to be enrolled in the named Master programs in 2010 with a view to implementing the Master of Philosophy program fully in 2011.

Please contact the Graduate Centre on 8303 5882 for further information.
